The average person, prompted by a steady supply of new features and functions, purchases a new wireless phone every 18-24 months. As a result, cell phone users in the United States throw away about 130 million mobile phones every year. These phones are not as small and innocent as they look - they contain many toxic chemicals such as antimony, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. One of the biggest concerns is lead, a suspected carcinogen linked to developmental abnormalities and responsible for causing adverse effects on the central nervous system, immune system, and kidneys.
